The Power of Silence

A few days ago, I came across a quote from Gandhi that resonated with me: "Speak only if it improves the silence." This short quote holds power—the power of unspoken words, the power of unwritten words, and the power of nonverbal communication. How we choose to communicate with those around us can have profound and lasting positive and negative effects. And with the addition of so many social media platforms, this power is fast-moving and holds even greater power.

Unspoken Words

Spoken words can uplift or hurt, heal, or harm. When we take the time to choose our words carefully, we honor the power they hold.

I am lucky to have people in my life that I can rely on through their ability to communicate. One of these people is my dad. He is able to find the best combination of words and silence to create calmness in me through stressful situations. When I need a medical procedure (that I expect to hurt), or I am going through something scary, he brings a solid and strong presence that lets me know I can do it and it will be okay.

Interactions like these remind me of the true power of communication. Embracing moments of silence can be a powerful tool, allowing space for reflection and understanding. By embracing silence with others, we become better listeners and, therefore, more thoughtful speakers.

Unwritten Words

Expressing my thoughts through written words has always been a sanctuary for me. Whether I'm writing a letter, a story, a journal entry, or now a blog post, it's a space where I can pour out my thoughts and emotions.

I also recognize the responsibility that comes with it when there is an audience. There is a distinct difference between quality and quantity. Each time we put pen to paper or type on our keyboards, it should serve a purpose—to enlighten, inspire, and connect. Writers should take breaks to allow for quiet moments, new experiences, and alternative perspectives to arise.

Social media platforms can be a double-edged sword. They can provide the ability for connection, but they can also overwhelm us with noise. I've found that taking a step back and asking myself, 'Does this post improve the silence?' helps me be more intentional with my sharing. By focusing on quality over quantity, we can create a more meaningful digital presence that truly adds value to our friends, followers, and social communities.

In a world where content is abundant, thoughtful and well-crafted pieces truly stand out and improve the silence.

Non-Verbal Communication

Shortly after I began writing this post, I was in the car when the song "More Than Words" by Extreme came on. This song beautifully captures the sentiment of actions speak louder than words. The silence of non-verbal communication can be just as powerful as spoken words.

Whether it's a hug, a smile, or a helping hand, these gestures have the ability to bridge language barriers and connect us on a deeper level. Five years ago, my children and I served on a mission trip to Guatemala. Our combined knowledge of the Spanish language was minimal and definitely not conversational. When we entered the gates of the orphanage we would be living for the next week, we wondered how we would interact with all of the children and staff. Our worries were quickly dimished when within the first hour, we played games with the kids, danced, played soccer, and found ways to communicate even without a common language. It was truly amazing!

It's important to remember that our actions can convey volumes through moments of silence, demonstrating respect, empathy, and understanding without uttering a single word. In our fast-paced world, the wisdom to "speak only if it improves the silence" invites us to pause and reflect on the true impact of our words and actions. It's a call to embrace the power of silence, which often speaks louder than any word could. We create space for deeper understanding and genuine human connection by valuing and nurturing these silences. Let us all seek to honor the silence, making every word and action a reflection of our best selves, ultimately enriching our lives and those around us.
