Just Move - Part 2
Approximately one year ago, I wrote the blog post Just MOVE, which explored how the simple act of moving can make a difference in your life. This move doesn’t always require monumental steps; sometimes, even the most minor shifts in daily life can carry significant meaning. Whether working from a new location for the day or embracing a spontaneous afternoon adventure, these small changes can significantly impact your life. Today, I want to look into this further and explore how traveling can enhance your brain health, creativity, and mental health.
For me, having a change of scenery is very important. This includes moving furniture around in my home so that my vantage point looks different every few months. I also work from home and find it harder to be creative when my desk view is always the same. Additionally, I’ve learned that traveling for purposes other than vacation is highly beneficial to your brain. If you have a remote position, have you ever thought about changing up your scenery? The benefits are endless!
Neuroplasticity, by definition, refers to the brain's remarkable ability to undergo structural and functional changes throughout a person's lifetime, regardless of age. These changes directly influence cognitive abilities, essentially granting the power to enhance our mental faculties. While some individuals may possess innate creativity, harnessing mental stimulation can empower anyone to cultivate and expand their creativity significantly. Doesn’t that make you want to step out of your daily routine and immerse yourself in new environments? It really is a superpower!
Changing your surroundings is known to boost creativity by shaking things up with new sights, sounds, and experiences. It breaks the monotony of routine, giving your brain a fresh perspective and reducing mental tiredness from the usual grind. Plus, it's a break from everyday distractions, letting you focus better and tapping into your emotions for creative inspiration. Some of the best ideas are born when we are outside of our normal environment - check out the examples below.
The idea for Uber originated when co-founder Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp had trouble hailing a cab in Paris. This experience led them to create an app that connects riders with drivers more efficiently, revolutionizing the transportation industry.
Blake Mycoskie, the founder of Toms Shoes, was inspired to start his company during a trip to Argentina where he observed many children without shoes. This experience led him to create a business model where for every pair of shoes purchased, a pair is donated to a child in need.
Traveling also has a remarkable impact on mental health because often the change of scenery and pace significantly reduce everyday stress and anxiety. Changing your environment also encourages mindfulness, allowing you to be more fully present in the moment, taking in the sights, sounds, and experiences that are new and different. Also, overcoming the challenges of travel, such as navigating a new city or communicating with new people, boosts confidence and personal growth. And spending time in nature—whether hiking in the mountains or relaxing by the ocean—provides a sense of calm and rejuvenation.
Allowing yourself time to be in a new place is a valuable investment in creativity, mental health, and personal growth. It opens your mind, reduces stress, and teaches you about the world in ways no textbook can. Life is short, and moments are fleeting, so you should savor the journey. By taking that step and altering your surroundings, the rewards and benefits are immeasurable. I encourage you to embark on your own travel adventures and discover the profound benefits it can bring to your life.
This month, I am living and working from sunny Florida. Having a new workspace overlooking a yard full of palm trees, plants, and flowers has already given me some new ideas. The ability to walk on the beach to start my day provides me exercise, sun, and grounding. I'm learning new streets, directions, restaurants, and places to shop. Switching up my daily routines has already given me a renewed energy and different outlook on the days. I can't wait to see the overall benefits at the end of the month!
I'd love to hear about your own travel experiences and how they've impacted your creativity and mental health. Share your stories in the comments below!
