Be the Buyer
I recently watched a video of Dan Sullivan talking about the Buyer Mentality and what it means for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and those looking to achieve their dreams through intentionality. Throughout the video, he talked about the thought process and inner conversation that you need to have to successfully move your organization forward – a process that he quoted as working as either the buyer or the seller, each having their own qualities. Sellers often wait for buyers to come to them, adjusting their offerings based on demand rather than their own preferences. Buyers intentionally seek out opportunities, making deliberate choices that align with their vision.
Rolls-Royce is undeniably one of the finest, most widely recognized car brands in the world. With 2020 pricing averaging between $455,000 and $535,000, it’s also one of the most expensive. A fun fact about the Rolls-Royce brand is that they don’t advertise. Essentially, they know their worth and that is enough. Instead of spending time and money on advertising, the brand has taken the time to build the precise image they want to be known for. They know that their product is high-quality and advertising it would only dimmish the true value of the brand. They most definitely have a buyer’s mentality.
So, what does this mean for you?
I love the idea of the buyer/seller mentality and immediately saw a connection to people and our relationship to others. As a young girl, I was quickly taught that I was a product. Whether or not it was intentional, I learned that my body should stay well kept, smelling good, with shiny hair, rosy cheeks, and above all, pure. In the beginning, I learned that as a product, I shouldn’t be tempting to the opposite sex. Showing too much skin (especially my shoulders in school) could be way too distracting. Later in life, I learned that as a product, I should be doing my best to attract others to me. Looking back at it, the seller mentality was given to me at a very young age without me even realizing it.
Girls aren’t the only ones taught this seller mentality. Boys are often taught to adhere to traditional gender roles, being tough and not showing emotions. This blind conformity can create a passive approach to life where they are not able to fully communicate their wants or needs. Boys are also taught to seek validation from authority figures, coaches, and peers. This dependence on external approval can lead to decisions based on what others think rather than on personal values or aspirations.
In life, we need to embrace the notion of being the buyer and not the seller, taking an active role in shaping our own destiny rather than allowing passive circumstances to dictate your path. Taking time to invest in your own growth and happiness is important to the creation of the life you desire. When you become the buyer in your own life, you learn to evaluate your options, make informed decisions, and take the necessary actions that move you closer to your goals. Being the buyer is about empowerment, intentionality, and purpose. Anything less than that will not be enough for long-lasting fulfillment.
The buyer mentality can be used in all areas of our life. Think about the following areas and how a mindset switch could help.
1. Career – Be able to identify your career goals and create a plan to achieve them. Pursue additional training, seek out mentors, and take on new challenges that align with your personal goals. Regularly assess your career path and adjust as needed to stay on track.
2. Personal growth – Take time to think about what is important to you. How do you want to spend your personal time? What hobbies would you like to explore? Dedicate time each day to activities that contribute to your personal development. Even small amounts of time each day will help you to reach your goal.
3. Relationships – Healthy relationships (family, friends, romantic, or other) are built on mutual respect, understanding, and effort. You actively teach others how to treat you based on what you tolerate and the boundaries that are set. Make sure to communicate openly, even when it’s difficult. Be willing to address and resolve conflicts. Learn to distance yourself from relationships that no longer serve you. You are NOT the product. You are the buyer in every relationship you choose to participate in. Remember that!
4. Health and wellbeing – Establish a routine that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep. Practice mindfulness and stress management techniques. Treat yourself like the Rolls-Royce you are!
By applying the buyer mindset across all areas of your life, you will create a balanced and more fulfilling life overall. Learn from the Rolls-Royce brand. Know your worth. Your personal brand becomes a testament to your quality and excellence, reducing your need for self-promotion. Be yourself, it’s enough. You are not a product – be the buyer!
